As Purim approaches, many of us look forward to sharing the story of Esther, dressing up, and of course, baking Hamantaschen! These delightful, triangular cookies are a staple of the holiday, reminding us of God's faithfulness and the deliverance of His people from Haman’s wicked plot.
Why Do We Make Hamantaschen?
The three-cornered shape of Hamantaschen is said to represent Haman’s hat or his pockets ("taschen" in Yiddish). By baking and eating these sweet treats, we remember how God overturned evil and brought salvation through Esther’s bravery and obedience. It’s a beautiful way to teach our children about trusting in the Lord and celebrating His goodness.
Gathering in the kitchen to bake together also deepens our family bonds and allows us to pass down meaningful traditions. Plus, Hamantaschen are delicious! - 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter (softened)
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons milk (or orange juice for extra flavor)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Your favorite filling (jam of your choice, nutella, pudding, etc.)
Directions:
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the softened butter and blend until the mixture is crumbly.

- Bake: Arrange the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Enjoy! Let them cool before enjoying with family and friends. Share the story of Esther as you eat!
